Card on old photograph of Bad Lauterberg, Germany

Mixed blessings and metaphors

1/27/04 Our Heavenly Father help each of us put aside our feelings, frustrations and unhappiness about this miserable day. Help us instead to be grateful for Life itself – for blessings received – for family and friends. Remind us too of times past – of friends no longer here and of the laughter and joy shared with us. Amen

Not sure what the weather was that day in Bowling Green at the Exchange Club meeting, but best guess: January, cold, crummy… “enough said.”

The prop is one of 5 photo albums of my ancestors. Brought over from Germany in the 1920s. Brought over to start a new life with less than $30 in his pocket. Yet, Grandpa was always smiling and full of joy, as if he swallowed a good joke that spread throughout his body.

How remarkable and sad to leave behind his beautiful homeland to venture out in a new country. Yet he did.

The mixed metaphor is related to my dad’s prayer on his in-laws photo album. We always have mixed blessings and we always need to be grateful.
