8/29/06 Our heavenly Father, we give thanks for the rest of the night, the challenges of another day, for family and friends, and for the opportunity to be about serving others. We thank you too for the rains that have come our way and the promise they bring to those who would feed and nourish us. Amen
Dad’s career at the YMCA was rooted in service. As kids, we didn’t understand how that was good for US. Dad was gone a lot. Nights were late… Years later, I understood more, less “like a child.”
I love hearing stories of the “whole community response”, community-level first responders, and just simply, neighbor helping neighbor going on now in Texas as they try to face this disaster. Reminds me of our winter strategies for dealing with blizzards: checking in on neighbors and the elderly, shoveling each other’s drives and walks, pushing when a car is stuck… we do know how to do this. Like an article I read today in The Atlantic, “Why Ordinary Citizens Are Acting as First Responders in Houston” it does feel good to help others. Serving is in our DNA, whether you know it or not.
